You have been selected to review AVKO membership! I thought what in the world is AVKO? After finding out this is the publisher of Sequential Spelling, I wanted to learn more! Many have recommended this product for spelling to me. We have chosen other methods through the years but as we were looking for a change this year, I was excited to learn more.

AVKO was developed by Don McCabe. Don McCabe, a dyslexic himself, is the research director of AVKO. His short biography is on the website and his autobiography is part of the membership benefits. It is a non-profit organization devoted to helping teachers, parents and researchers sense 1974. The AVKO Educational Foundation is open to membership to all those interested in helping others achieve literacy. Benefits include FREE E-books, 25% discount on all orders and access to FREE online resources. The cost is $25/per year. When you take into consideration the free training you will receive through a large volume of free E-Books and MP3 files, the value is great. This is in addition to also getting a 25% discount.

Mission Statement:

The AVKO Educational Research Foundation founded in 1974 has as its mission the following:
*To determine what makes the learning of reading and spelling so difficult for some and so easy for others.

*To determine what it is about our language that good readers learn without being taught that poor readers don't.

*To determine whether or not that which poor readers don't learn is ever systematically taught and if it isn't, if it can be.

*To devise techniques and materials to enable teachers (or parents) to systematically teach poor readers and/or poor spellers that which schools presently are not teaching.

*To widely disseminate its discoveries of techniques and materials that enable dyslexics to learn to read and to spell.

"The AVKO Educational Research Foundation has achieved the first four points of its mission. It would like to go out of existence IF AND ONLY IF AVKO can find another non-profit organization that can and will achieve its 5th mission point: "to widely disseminate AVKO's techniques and materials."

The site was a bit overwhelming but once you learn your way around, there is a large amount of information to glean. I do not have a child who has been diagnosed as Dyslexic, but I still found some good information. There is a large amount offered on their FREEBIES page.
If you find these helpful then I definitely think the $25 membership is well worth your investment. You can explore membership more throughout the site and on their Membership Page. While we have gone with another Curriculum for Spelling, we will be accessing some of the offerings from AVKO.
